Since 2014, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and Office of the Inspector General (OIG) have co-sponsored the annual "Story of A Building" Seminar. This seminar is designed as a forum for sharing information among school districts about the building construction process. The seminar takes place at a recently opened school and is taught by the school officials who managed the building project. It is an opportunity for district officials to share their lessons learned and best practices with other school districts. District officials, in their own words, recount how they navigated the MSBA process in successful partnership with the MSBA to complete their school building project.
Attendees gain insight from project management teams, owner’s project managers, architects, contractors, building committee members and other essential stakeholders who share best practices from their school building experience.
Recently, the MSBA added a second "Story of A Building" Seminar to the calendar. The subject matter emphasis of the second training is envisioned as supplemental to the general overview provided by the original seminar. This additional training helps to educate districts on specialty topics.
Each "Story of A Building" Seminar is hosted at a recently completed MSBA school project. The school building tour is open to all attendees which is led in small groups often by students. The tour helps attendees visualize a lot of the information discussed by presenters, including questions pertaining to the planning, design, construction, and post-construction experiences with the school building project.
