State Treasurer Steven Grossman, Chairman of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), and Jack McCarthy, MSBA Executive Director, today joined with Boston officials to break ground on the new Dearborn STEM Academy. The MSBA is reimbursing 75.34% of eligible costs toward the $73,498,295 project.
"We're proud to honor the promise we made to the people of Boston, and I'm delighted to join Mayor Marty Walsh to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Dearborn STEM Academy," said Treasurer Grossman. "We are particularly pleased that students will be educated in a state-of-the-art learning environment that will prepare them for countless opportunities in our innovation economy."
The project consists of a new 128,304 square-foot school on the site of the existing facility. The current school was built in 1912 and suffers from deficiencies in major building systems, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Dearborn STEM Academy will serve 600 students in grades 6 through 12.
“The new Dearborn STEM Academy will provide local students with a beautiful new learning space,” Executive Director McCarthy said. “This will undoubtedly enhance and improve their ability to excel in the classroom.”
The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over $10.6 billion in reimbursements for school capital improvement projects. MSBA reimbursements have saved districts over $2.9 billion in avoided local interest costs and have provided much needed cash flow to communities.
