Granby Awarded $17.6 Grant for West Street Elementary School Project

State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), and MSBA Chief Executive Officer, Maureen Valente, today announced that the MSBA Board of Directors voted to approve funding for an addition and renovation project at the existing East Meadow School in Granby that will relocate PK–3 students currently attending the existing West Street Elementary School and combine grades PK–6 at the East Meadow School. The District is authorized to receive a maximum grant of up to $17,624,506. One of the next steps is for the District and the MSBA to enter into a Project Funding Agreement, which will detail the project’s scope and budget, along with the conditions under which the Town will receive its MSBA grant.

“The plans for this project are the direct result of a collaborative partnership between Granby officials and the MSBA,” said Treasurer Goldberg. “We look forward to delivering an efficient, sustainable and cost-effective facility that will maximize local and state taxpayer resources while providing a top-notch facility in which students can learn effectively.”

The project would relocate West Street Elementary School students and combine Kindergarten through grade 6 at the East Meadow School, where there will be an addition and renovation project. East Meadow School was built in 1965 and has deficiencies in mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. West Street Elementary School was built in 1941 and suffers from deficiencies in major building systems including mechanical, plumbing and windows. The improved 68,760 square foot East Meadow School would serve 430 students in Kindergarten through grade 6.

“The MSBA continues to partner with Massachusetts communities in the ongoing work of upgrading our public schools,” Chief Executive Officer Valente said. “These improvements to school facilities will enhance students’ ability to excel in the classroom.”

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over 1,650 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made over $11.8 billion in reimbursements for school construction.
