The MSBA Helps Break Ground for the New Thurgood Marshall Middle School

Jack McCarthy, Executive Director of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (“MSBA”), today joined state and local officials at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Thurgood Marshall Middle School.  The MSBA is contributing a maximum total facilities grant of up to $49 million of eligible expenses for the project.

State Treasurer Steven Grossman, MSBA Chair, expressed delight at the start of the long-awaited project. “Thanks to the MSBA’s successful partnership with Lynn, students and staff of Thurgood Marshall Middle School will benefit from a state-of-the-art learning and teaching environment for many years to come,” Treasurer Grossman said.

The project is for the construction of a new 181,850 square-foot school on Brookline Street serving 1,100 students in grades 6 through 8. The current school was built in 1923 and suffers from deficiencies in major building systems including mechanical, electrical and plumbing.

“As a result of the successful collaboration between the MSBA and Lynn, students at the new Thurgood Marshall Middle School will get a completely up-to-date learning environment,” said Executive Director McCarthy. “We are delighted to be taking part in this work.”

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over 1,100 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made over $10.5 billion in reimbursements for education capital improvement projects.
