MSBA Moves Center Elementary School in Hopkinton into Schematic Design Phase

State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Chair of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (“MSBA”), and Jack McCarthy, MSBA Executive Director, announced today that the MSBA Board of Directors voted to move the Center Elementary School in Hopkinton into the Schematic Design phase. In the Schematic Design phase, Hopkinton and the MSBA will look at possible options to replace the existing school on the Irvine site on Hayden Rowe. The next step is for the MSBA to work in collaboration with the District to produce detailed designs for a potential school project.

“Listening to the needs of a community and developing projects accordingly are priorities at the MSBA, and the Center Elementary School project is a case study in that sentiment,” said Treasurer Goldberg.  “Thanks to our collaborative work with local officials, we are working to build a safe and modern educational facility that will provide students with a top-notch learning environment.”

The proposed project would create a new school of approximately 83,700 square feet to replace the existing facility, which suffers from deficiencies in major building systems including mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Center Elementary School was built in 1954 and serves 395 students in Kindergarten through first grade.

“The new Center Elementary School will provide a better learning and teaching infrastructure for area students and teachers,” stated Executive Director McCarthy. “We are delighted to be partnering on this proposed project.”

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities. Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over 1,500 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made over $11.3 billion in reimbursements for school construction projects.
